My nephew is in town to visit with his grandparents and by extension: me, an uncle, and several cousins. Ben has grown into a quite erudite young man, with just enough sass to keep him from becoming disliked (or dissed on). Ben shows a strong ability to "read a situation" and be able to respond accordingly. He is most certainly an engaging young man.
An ability, I might add, I took many, many years to learn. Especially gracefully. For all my home training, all my learning outside of school, for all the self-awareness trainings taken over the many years. The new generation still has it all over me. Can I speak with intellegent rhetoric? Without a doubt. Can I, placed in many different venues and trainings, not act accordingly and participate in ways that do not 1) label me a rube, and 2) an undereduated, yet loveable fool. Of course, I can be seen from the lowliest bar to the most expensive club, acting appropriately for the occasion (thanks Mom and Daddy!). My world would be very small indeed it they had not helped me learn how to fit into many groups and cultures.
Ben realizes the importance of a well-rounded education and life. It took me over 50 years to get here. While we are both here at the same time, Ben still looks young and ready to take on the world. I look like I'm sliding down the steep side, gathering speed as I go! Once again I am struck by how the young of our species "gets it", and I'm left feeling as though, "Oh! NOW I get it!!!"
